I stopped by a coffee shop for my afternoon fix yesterday. While I tried to resist the pastry case, I noticed that the menu listed a variety of sweets, followed by the disclaimer, “Deserts may vary.” Ay yi yi. Does this really need to be said? Desserts are what we eat after dinner (think an extra ‘s’ for sweets, if you must), while deserts are those dry places out West.
That said, unless you’re making a food-related pun, someone who gets what he deserves gets his ‘just deserts.’ Not a piece of pie. That would hardly discourage him from doing it again.
